Sunu: Navigation Aid for the Visually Impaired

As technology has changed the lives of mankind, it has remarkably innovated the lives of the visually impaired. Daily tasks are difficult for people who have lost their one or more of their senses. Visual impairment makes it nearly impossible to navigate without special equipment, depriving them of independence. However, wearable technology such as Sunu has committed to making their lives easier.

Originally starting as an Indiegogo campaign, Sunu’s creators wanted to make a band that uses ultrasonic technology to sense the user’s surroundings. This is done by combining sonar-echolocation technology with precision haptic vibration feedback to enable different objects to be sensed by the band. This makes the band quite advanced since it uses sounds to help their users navigate their environment.

Also, the watch has other features that are very useful for their wearers. For instance, the Sunu even comes with low-energy bluetooth technology that helps the device connect to a smartphone app. Through the app, wearers are given full control to their preferences in regards to how objects in their surroundings are sensed. This is an innovative feature that gives visually impaired people more control over how to sense their surroundings.

Furthermore, the Sunu band has the potential to have a significant influence on the lives of the visually impaired. Future tech inventions could improve upon Sunu’s sonar-echolocation technology. This could lead to bands that can reveal the exact objects in the environment, and even help identify people. Regardless, Sunu is a device that truly will help the visually impaired with their lives.
